What you'll see
The only inhabited island of the archipelago and a protected biosphere reserve, pink granite, nesting seabirds and some of the clearest water in Portugal.
A 17th-century sea fort on a tiny islet, reached by a narrow causeway, once a defence against pirates, now the island's most striking sight.
The fishing town of Peniche and the boat ride out across open water, and, with the right boat, a trip into the island's sea grottoes and caves.
Your day, hour by hour
Sample itinerary, fully customisable on the day with your guide.
An early start to catch the crossing. Your guide sets off north towards Peniche.
North along the Oeste coast to the fishing town and peninsula of Peniche.
Time at the harbour and fortress before boarding, while your guide shares the lay of the land.
The boat out to the island, keep an eye out for seabirds and the first sight of the fort.
Free time on the island: the Fort of São João Baptista, the lighthouse trail, a swim in the clear water and, conditions allowing, the sea grottoes.
Back to Peniche and a seafood lunch in town (on your own account).
On the way home, the walled medieval village of Óbidos and a taste of ginjinha in a chocolate cup.
Back to the city in the evening.
