The Swingo way

Porto in a day, done properly.

Porto is around 310 km north of Lisbon, close to three hours of driving each way, so this is a long day: about 12 hours door to door, with roughly six hours in the city. We say that plainly because it is the whole point. The drive is direct, with no sightseeing stops on the road, so the time is spent in Porto rather than on the way there, and every admission the day needs is booked before you arrive.

Every admission included

The Clérigos Tower and the Sé cloister in every option, plus either the timed entry at Livraria Lello or the tasting at Caves Ferreira. Nothing to buy at the door.

100% private

Your group only, with one driver-guide for the whole day. No coach, no shared timetable.

Door to door from Lisbon

Your hotel, a private apartment, the airport or the cruise terminal. Water and Wi-Fi on board.

Free cancellation

Cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund. Instant confirmation when you book.

What you'll see

The north, in one unforgettable day.

The Ribeira waterfront in Porto seen from Vila Nova de Gaia, with rabelo boats on the Douro
UNESCO Site

The Ribeira and the Dom Luís I bridge

Porto's UNESCO-listed riverfront, tiled façades falling to the Douro under an iron bridge of the Eiffel school. You walk the medieval quarter and cross the upper deck for the view over both banks.

Since 1906

Livraria Lello, without the queue

The 1906 bookshop with the carved staircase runs on timed vouchers, and walk-in entry is not possible in normal hours. On the Standard option we hold the slot and the timing, so you go straight in.

Caves Ferreira, the house that stayed PortuguesePhoto coming soon
Since 1751

Caves Ferreira, the house that stayed Portuguese

Founded in 1751 on the Gaia riverfront, Ferreira is the only Port house that has always remained Portuguese. The visit is told through Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the Ferreirinha, who ran it in the 19th century.

  1. 06:00

Pickup at your Lisbon address 15 min

Hotel, private apartment, the airport or the cruise terminal. An early start, because the day is long and the morning in Porto is the good part.

  2. 06:15

Drive north to Porto about 3 h

Straight up the A1, with no sightseeing stops on the road. The time saved is spent in the city instead of on the way there.

The gothic cathedral and its cloister of blue and white azulejos, five minutes on foot from the tower. Admission included in every option.

  5. 10:30

    Livraria Lello 30 min

The 1906 bookshop and its carved staircase, on a pre-booked timed entry so you walk in at your slot instead of queueing. Standard option.

  6. 11:00

Ribeira and the Dom Luís I bridge 1 h 30

Down through the medieval quarter to the riverfront, then across the upper deck of the bridge for the view over Porto and Gaia.

  7. 12:30

At your own expense, on your guide's local pick rather than a fixed group menu.

  8. 14:00

    Vila Nova de Gaia 1 h 30

Down to the quay and across the lower deck into Gaia, walking the waterfront under the cellar façades. On the wine options this is the tasting at Caves Ferreira.

  9. 15:30

Drive back to Lisbon about 2 h 30

South on the A1, arriving in the early evening.

  10. 18:00

Questions

Common questions, answered.

Is Porto worth a day trip from Lisbon?

Yes, if you accept that it is a long day. Porto is around 310 km north of Lisbon, close to three hours of driving each way, so the day runs about 12 hours door to door and leaves roughly six hours in the city. It suits travellers who cannot spare a night but still want the icons, the river and a Port tasting.

How long is the drive from Lisbon to Porto?

About three hours each way on the A1 motorway, with no sightseeing stops on the road in either direction. We collect you at your Lisbon address around 6 am and drop you back around 6 pm. The drive is direct on purpose: the time saved is spent in Porto rather than on the way there.

Is it better to take the train or a private tour from Lisbon to Porto?

The Alfa Pendular train is faster and cheaper if you are travelling independently. A private day costs more and buys different things: pickup at your own door, one driver-guide all day, admissions already booked, and no station transfers at either end. The train moves you; the private day plans the whole day.

Do you need a ticket for Livraria Lello?

Yes. Livraria Lello runs a timed voucher system and walk-in entry is not possible in normal hours, with popular slots gone days ahead in high season. On the Standard option we book the slot and hold the timing, so you go in at your time instead of queueing.

What can you see in Porto in one day?

The historic core on foot: the Clérigos Tower, a bell tower of about 75 metres with more than 200 steps, the Sé Cathedral cloister, Livraria Lello, and the medieval Ribeira down on the Douro, plus the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge for the view over Porto and Gaia.

Which Port house do you visit in Gaia?

Caves Ferreira, at Avenida Ramos Pinto in Vila Nova de Gaia, founded in 1751 and the only Port house that has always stayed Portuguese. The visit is told through Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the Ferreirinha, the most influential figure in the history of the Douro. Choose the tasting when you book.

Are the tickets included?

Every admission on this tour is included in the rate and reserved in advance. There is nothing to buy at the door and nothing to queue for. The Clérigos Tower and the Sé cloister are in all four options, and each option adds either the Livraria Lello entry or the tasting at Caves Ferreira. Lunch is not included.

How many people fit, and is the tour accessible?

Up to 15 travellers: a car up to 4, a van up to 8, and two vehicles from 9. Larger groups on request. The tour is not wheelchair accessible: the morning is about three hours on foot on cobbles and slopes and the tower is a climb. Service animals are welcome and infant seats are available on request.

How much does a private Porto day trip from Lisbon cost?

From €642 for the whole group on the Standard option, with the driver-guide, the private vehicle, fuel, tolls, parking and every admission included. The three tasting options at Caves Ferreira start at €660, €678 and €709 per group. Prices are per group, not per person.
