The Swingo way

Portugal's only resident dolphins

The Sado estuary holds a resident population of about 26 bottlenose dolphins, monitored by the ICNF since the 1980s. Resident means they do not migrate, which is why sightings here run at around 95% of departures rather than the coin toss you get on open-sea trips. It is one of only three resident estuarine colonies in Europe, alongside Scotland and Ireland.

A licensed operator

Never more than three boats with the animals at once, no cutting across them, no more than 30 minutes alongside and never closer than 30 metres. Those rules apply all year.

100% private

Only your group participates, from the pickup to the boat and the coast road.

Pickup wherever you are

Your hotel, apartment, the cruise terminal, Lisbon airport or a private address. Wi-Fi on board and bottled water.

Free cancellation

Cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund. If the operator cancels the boat for sea conditions, you are not charged for it.

Questions

Common questions, answered.

Will we definitely see dolphins?

Sightings happen on roughly 95% of departures, but they are wild animals and it is never a guarantee. The Sado holds a resident population of about 26 bottlenose dolphins, monitored year-round by the ICNF, which is why the odds are unusually good. Your guide will tell you honestly what the sea is doing that morning.

How many dolphins live in the Sado estuary?

About 26 bottlenose dolphins, following the birth of a calf in July 2025, according to the ICNF, the Portuguese nature and forest institute. It is the only resident dolphin population in Portugal and one of just three resident estuarine colonies in Europe, alongside populations in Scotland and Ireland.

Can you watch the Sado dolphins in August?

Yes, with restrictions. For the fourth summer running the ICNF has closed the mouth of the estuary to dolphin observation for the whole of August and paused all observation daily between 13:00 and 15:00. Trips continue along the Arrábida coast, the Tróia coast and the rest of the Sado, and we book you on a morning departure.

Does the boat run all year?

Yes. Because the dolphins are resident rather than migratory, the boat operates year-round. Departures depend on weather and sea conditions, and mornings usually find calmer water. If the operator cancels for sea conditions, you are not charged for the boat.

Is Sado dolphin watching ethical?

We use a licensed operator that follows the official code of conduct. No more than three boats may follow the animals at once, boats may not cut across them, may not stay with them for more than 30 minutes and may not approach closer than 30 metres. Those rules apply all year, not only in summer.

How long is the day and what does it cost?

About 9 hours door to door, from €338 for the whole group rather than per person. That covers the private vehicle and driver-guide, hotel or cruise port pickup, fuel, tolls and parking, the licensed boat and Sado Estuary Nature Reserve admission. Lunch in Setúbal is at your own expense.

What else do we see besides the dolphins?

The Cristo Rei sanctuary above the 25 de Abril bridge, free time in Setúbal where the local speciality is choco frito, the clifftop headland of Cabo Espichel, and Sesimbra Castle, a national monument since 1910 and the last Portuguese castle over the sea to keep its medieval outline. Entry to the castle is free.

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

No. The dolphin-watching boat has no step-free access, so this day is not wheelchair accessible. Strollers are welcome, infant seats are available on request and service animals are allowed. If step-free access matters, our Arrábida and Azeitão wine day is the accessible alternative.

Can you pick us up from our hotel, cruise ship or the airport?

Yes, anywhere in the Lisbon area: hotel, apartment, cruise terminal, Lisbon airport or a private address. Give us the pickup point when you book and your driver-guide meets you there. Drop-off is at the same place, or at another address on request.

What is your cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour starts, for a full refund. After that the booking is non-refundable. Confirmation is instant at the time of booking, and payment is taken securely at checkout by Stripe.
