The Swingo way

The Alentejo, with the hard access handled.

The two things people remember most sit outside the walls, on roads that punish a rental car: the Almendres Cromlech at the end of a dirt track, and Monsaraz another hour east. Travel private, with a driver-guide who has done the road this week and can tell you what you are actually looking at.

What you'll see

Two thousand years in one city, and stones older still.

Standing stones of the Almendres Cromlech with a cork oak behind them, west of Évora
Older than Stonehenge

The stones that come before everything

The Almendres Cromlech is the largest megalithic enclosure in the Iberian Peninsula and a Portuguese national monument, with 95 known monoliths standing among cork oaks about 12 km west of Évora. It was raised around 2,000 years before Stonehenge and only rediscovered in 1964. Since September 2024 you walk a marked circuit around the enclosure, laid out to stop erosion.

Skulls and bones lining the walls of the Chapel of Bones in Évora
UNESCO Site

A city that keeps three ages at once

Inside the walls, Évora stacks a Roman temple, a Gothic cathedral of local marble and a 17th century ossuary chapel within a fifteen minute walk of each other. The whole centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nothing here is a reconstruction, which is why the city rewards a guide who can tell you what you are actually looking at.

The access is the productPhoto coming soon
Why private

The access is the product

The two things people remember most sit outside the walls. The Almendres track is roughly four kilometres of unpaved road with deep potholes, and Monsaraz is another hour east. A private vehicle with the right ground clearance turns both from a gamble into a stop, and your driver-guide has done the road this week.

Your day, hour by hour

Questions

Common questions, answered.

What is the difference between the three options?

All three include the Almendres Cromlech and the UNESCO old town, with entry to the Chapel of Bones and the Cathedral. The eight-hour base day is that core. The nine-hour option adds a guided visit and tasting at Adega Cartuxa. The ten-hour option adds Monsaraz above Lake Alqueva, and has no tasting.

What is the Almendres Cromlech?

The largest megalithic enclosure in the Iberian Peninsula and a Portuguese national monument: 95 known monoliths standing among cork oaks about 12 km west of Évora, near the village of Guadalupe. It was raised around 2,000 years before Stonehenge and only rediscovered in 1964.

Can you actually walk among the stones?

The site is open. After a year of conservation work it reopened in September 2024 with a marked circuit laid out around the enclosure to stop the ground eroding, so you walk the perimeter rather than in between the monoliths. There is no fence keeping you at a distance and no ticket.

Is the road to the stones really that bad?

The last stretch is roughly four kilometres of unpaved road with deep potholes, and it is the reason many rental cars turn back. There is no public transport. A private vehicle with the right ground clearance turns the stones from a gamble into a stop, and your driver-guide has done the road this week.

Are entrance tickets included?

Yes, on every option. We pay the Chapel of Bones and Évora Cathedral in advance and build them into the price, so nothing is collected on the day. The Roman Temple, the Almendres Cromlech and the village and castle of Monsaraz are free to visit.

Is a wine tasting included?

Only on the Cartuxa option, which adds a guided visit and tasting at Adega Cartuxa, at Quinta de Valbom outside the city, with local olive oil and Évora sheep's cheese. The base day and the Monsaraz option do not include a tasting, and none is sold on the day.

Is it the Temple of Diana?

No. The temple was raised for the imperial cult of Augustus, and the name Temple of Diana is a later invention that stuck to it. It is one of the best preserved Roman temples in the Iberian Peninsula, and your guide will tell you where the myth came from.

How long is the day and where do you collect us?

Eight hours on the base day, nine with the Cartuxa tasting and ten with Monsaraz, door to door, with around an hour and a half each way. We collect you at your hotel lobby, the cruise terminal, Lisbon airport arrivals or any private Lisbon address agreed at booking.

How many people fit, and what is the accessibility?

A car carries up to 4 travellers, a van up to 8, and from 9 to 15 you travel in two vehicles with two guides. Above 15 we quote as a charter. The tour is not wheelchair accessible: the Almendres circuit is rough ground and Évora and Monsaraz are cobbled. Service animals are welcome.

What is your cancellation and payment policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour starts, for a full refund. After that the full amount is non-refundable. Booking is confirmed instantly, with secure card payment by Stripe at checkout, and the total for your group is shown before you pay.
