On September 1, 2026, we asked the official Pena Palace ticket site a simple question: what is still on sale over the next 30 days? The 9:30 am slot was sold out on all 30 dates. The 10:00 am slot was gone on 11 of them. Almost everything after lunch was still there.
The usual advice is to book as early as you can. It is true, and it does not help you plan. So we kept checking, on 33 days over two months, and the answer is more useful than we expected: Pena Palace rarely sells out. Its mornings do.
What we checked
A small script read the page for the Essential Visit, the standard palace ticket, on the official Parques de Sintra ticket site, each time for the next 30 days. It ran at 8:00 am, except for the first reading, on September 1, at 1:00 pm. It reads what is on sale and buys nothing. From September 1 to October 31, 2026, that gave us 16,675 readings of 17 time slots, for 90 visit dates from September 2 to November 30.
We should be clear about the limits. We checked on 33 of 61 days, not every day: 11 in September and 22 in October. We have no data yet for winter, spring or summer. And each number below is a share of our checks, not a count of tickets: the site shows whether an hour is on sale, not how many tickets are left.
We also read only the official site and only that ticket, so we cannot speak for the Complete Visit or the guided visits. Parques de Sintra reserves 25 entries in each time slot for a separate fast-track ticket, sold through partner platforms, and we did not track those. So "sold out" in this article means the Essential Visit sold out on the official site.
How far ahead each slot sells out
The table shows how often each time slot was sold out when we checked, by how many days were left before the visit.
| Time slot | 15 to 30 days before | 8 to 14 days | 4 to 7 days | 1 to 3 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9:30 am | 41% | 87% | 95% | 98% |
| 10:00 am | 2% | 24% | 60% | 85% |
| 10:30 am | 0% | 10% | 39% | 79% |
| 11:00 am | 0% | 1% | 14% | 49% |
| 11:30 am | 0% | 0% | 3% | 14% |
| 12:00 pm | 0% | 0% | 0% | 1% |
| 12:30 to 3:00 pm | 0% | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| 3:30 pm | 0% | 4% | 19% | 52% |
| 4:00 to 5:30 pm | 0% | 0% | 0% | 0% |
One caution on the first column. Our checks stop on October 31, so about half of the 15 to 30 days column is November dates, when the mornings were still open. For September and October visits alone, 9:30 am was already gone in 82% of our checks at 15 to 30 days: 55% at 25 to 30 days and 99% at 15 to 19 days.
Now look at the last check before each visit. We saw 53 dates one to three days out. On those, 9:30 am was sold out on 52 dates, 10:00 am on 47, 10:30 am on 46, 11:00 am on 36, 3:30 pm on 31, 11:30 am on 11 and noon on one. Every other slot was on sale on all 53.
What to do with this
- You want 9:30 am: book a month ahead if you can. For September and October visits, it was gone in 55% of our checks at 25 to 30 days and in 99% at 15 to 19 days.
- You want 10:00 am: book at least two weeks ahead. At 8 to 14 days it was gone in 24% of our checks, and at 4 to 7 days in 60%.
- You want 10:30 am: book at least a week ahead.
- You want 11:00 am: book at least four days ahead. After that it is close to a coin toss.
- You are late, or you do not care: take anything from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, or from 4:00 pm on. In our checks, those slots were always on sale.
The odd one: 3:30 pm
The 3:30 pm slot does not behave like the hours around it. One to three days before the visit, it was sold out in 52% of our checks, while 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm never were. Parques de Sintra publishes the 25 entries per slot reserved for its fast-track ticket, but not the total per slot, so we cannot tell you why. If you want that hour, treat it like a morning.
The season matters, and the weekend less than you think
The pressure drops with the season. When we checked in September, 9:30 am was sold out in 89% of the following dates. When we checked in October, it was 52%. For early November visits, checked 4 to 14 days ahead, 10:00 am was never sold out, against 76% for September visits.
We expected weekends to be the hard part, and they were not. For September and October visits checked 4 to 14 days ahead, 9:30 am was gone in nearly every check, weekend or not (73 of 74 on Saturdays and Sundays, 213 of 214 on weekdays). The gap shows at 10:00 am: sold out in 26% of those weekend checks, against 54% of the weekday ones. That is one slot over one autumn, so read it as a pattern and not as a rule. We would not assume any of this holds in July.
What this data does not tell you
It tells you when tickets are easy to get. It does not tell you when the palace is pleasant. A slot that stays on sale is not necessarily a quiet one: the ticket site says nothing about how many people are inside at 2:00 pm. Parques de Sintra does say, on an undated page, that "the afternoon is, at the moment, the time of day when the Palace of Pena has fewer visitors". That fits what we saw, but we did not measure it.
We did not measure lines either. Parques de Sintra says timed entry means that "instead of spending time in the queue to access the Palace, you can visit everything your ticket includes". It also sells the fast-track ticket, with priority access at the park gate and the palace entrance, so we would not assume that a regular ticket means no line at all.
Sold-out hours do come back now and then, probably from changes and cancellations. Of the 186 date and time combinations we saw sold out and read again later, 13 were on sale again at a later check. That is 7%, and we may have missed some on the days we did not check. Worth a look, not a plan.
The rules that catch people out
These come from Parques de Sintra, not from our checks.
- Your time is for the palace, not the park. Getting from the park gate to the palace takes about 30 minutes, on foot or by the small shuttle, and the shuttle ticket has to be bought in advance.
- Late means no entry. "There is no delay tolerance", and a ticket for a missed slot cannot be changed or refunded.
- Early does not help. You cannot enter the palace before your time, so use the wait to see the park.
- You can move the date beforehand. Tickets bought online in advance can be rescheduled on the Parques de Sintra site, within one year.
Book it yourself, or with a tour?
You do not need us for this. Anyone can buy on the official site, and if you are doing Sintra on your own, the train from Lisbon and a ticket bought with this table in mind are all you need. Here is what a day in Sintra costs if you do.
A tour does not change the rules. Entrance to the palace is only at a scheduled time, for everyone. What changes is who deals with it: on our private Sintra tours with the palace ticket included, we book your timed-entry ticket for you and plan the day around that hour.
Common questions
How far in advance should I book Pena Palace tickets?
It depends on the hour. In our checks from September to October 2026, book 9:30 am a month ahead if you can, 10:00 am at least two weeks ahead, 10:30 am at least a week and 11:00 am at least four days. From 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, a few days was enough.
Which Pena Palace time slot sells out first?
The first of the day, 9:30 am. It was sold out in 41% of our checks 15 to 30 days before the visit (82% for September and October visits alone), in 87% at 8 to 14 days and in 98% at one to three days. The next to go are 10:00, 10:30 and 11:00 am, in that order.
Can I buy Pena Palace tickets a few days before my visit?
Yes, but probably not for the morning. In our checks from September to October 2026, one to three days before the visit, 9:30, 10:00 and 10:30 am were sold out in 98%, 85% and 79% of them. Every slot from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm and from 4:00 pm on was still on sale in all of them.
Are afternoon tickets for Pena Palace easier to get?
Yes. In our 33 checks from September to October 2026, the slots from 12:30 to 3:00 pm and from 4:00 to 5:30 pm were never sold out. The exception is 3:30 pm, sold out in 52% of checks one to three days before. Parques de Sintra also says that, at the moment, the afternoon has fewer visitors.
Why does the 3:30 pm slot at Pena Palace sell out?
We do not know. It was sold out in 52% of our checks one to three days before the visit, while 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm never were. Parques de Sintra publishes the 25 entries per slot reserved for its fast-track ticket, but not the total per slot, so we cannot say whether it has fewer tickets or more demand.
Is it easier to get Pena Palace tickets in November?
So far, yes. Checked 4 to 14 days ahead, 9:30 am was sold out in 53% of our checks for early November visits, against more than 98% for September and October. At the same distance, 10:00 am went from 76% in September to 36% in October and 0% in early November.
What can I do if my Pena Palace time slot is sold out?
Pick a later hour: from 12:30 to 3:00 pm, no slot sold out in our checks. Checking again rarely works: of the 186 date and time combinations we saw sold out and read again later, only 13 (7%) came back. The fast-track ticket, sold through partner platforms, has its own 25 entries per slot, but we did not check those.
Is there a skip-the-line ticket for Pena Palace?
Yes, and it is a separate ticket. Parques de Sintra calls it fast-track and sells it through partner platforms, with priority access at the park gate and the palace entrance and 25 entries reserved per slot. It is still for one set hour, with no delay tolerance. We did not track its availability.
Do I need a timed ticket to enter Pena Palace?
Yes. Parques de Sintra says palace tickets are "only available for a specific date and time" and that entrance to the palace is "only at scheduled time". The official ticket site shows which hours are still on sale, and that is the page we read for this article.
What happens if I arrive late for my Pena Palace time slot?
You do not get in. Parques de Sintra says "there is no delay tolerance", and a ticket for a missed slot cannot be changed or refunded. Arriving early does not help either. The time on your ticket is for the palace, not the park gate, and getting between them takes about 30 minutes.
How much is a Pena Palace ticket in 2026?
On the Parques de Sintra site, the Essential Visit costs 20 euros for adults aged 18 to 64, 18 euros for youths aged 6 to 17 and for seniors over 65, and 65 euros for a family of two adults and two youths. The Complete Visit costs 45 euros for adults.
What is the last time slot at Pena Palace?
The last palace ticket is at 5:30 pm and the last admission at 6:00 pm, and the palace closes at 6:30 pm, according to Parques de Sintra. The 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm slots were never sold out in our checks, but they leave you little time before closing.
