Coimbra
Coimbra and the university on the hill above the Mondego river
Moving on from Lisbon to Porto? Do not waste the day on a train. Your private driver-guide picks you up at your Lisbon hotel and drops you at your Porto hotel, with up to three stops on the way, two full hours at each, and your luggage locked safely in the car. Óbidos, Nazaré, Batalha, Fátima, Coimbra or Aveiro with Costa Nova: you choose, we plan the timing and the tickets. The same service runs from Porto to Lisbon, at the same price. Fewer stops, longer stops, and a guide who gets out of the car: that is the whole idea.

One place, done properly. Two hours in Óbidos, Nazaré, Batalha, Fátima, Coimbra or Aveiro with Costa Nova, with your driver-guide walking with you. Most travellers choose Óbidos or Nazaré; Coimbra with a booked slot at the Joanina Library is the connoisseur choice.

The classic pairing: Óbidos and Nazaré, or Batalha and Nazaré, or Fátima and Coimbra. Two full hours in each, lunch at the second stop, and you still arrive in Porto in time for dinner.

A full day along the A8 coast route: Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha, or Nazaré, Fátima and Coimbra. Ninety minutes in each, in the natural order along the road; when Coimbra is one of the three we give it two hours, so the Joanina Library still fits, and one hour to each of the other two. We plan it so nothing is rushed.

Before you book
The price is per vehicle and the same in both directions; the number of stops is the option you book, the places are yours to choose from the list. Stops follow the natural order along the route. Coimbra always gets a two-hour stop, with a timed Joanina Library ticket that we book for you; in the 3-stop option the other two stops are one hour each. The Sanctuary of Fátima is free and open all day; on 12 and 13 May and on 12 and 13 October the pilgrimages draw very large crowds. Nazaré has giant waves from October to March; in summer it is a beach town with a spectacular clifftop. Batalha and Fátima are 23 km apart. Pickup at Lisbon Airport and drop-off at Porto Airport cost the same as hotel to hotel; give us the flight number and we track it. Luggage stays locked in the vehicle while you walk. Not suitable for wheelchair users; strollers and infant seats on request.

Questions
The direct drive is about 312 km on the A1, 3 hours to 3 h 15. With one two-hour stop, count about 5 h 45 door to door. Two stops of two hours take about 8 hours. Three stops along the A8 coast route take 9 to 9 h 30, so plan a full day.
Yes. The Sanctuary is open all day and free, six kilometres off the A1 with no extra toll. Daily mass in the Chapel of the Apparitions is at 12:30 from Monday to Saturday, and in English at 15:30 on weekdays. On 12 and 13 May and in October the pilgrimages draw hundreds of thousands, so allow extra time or choose another day.
Óbidos is a walled medieval village you can walk in one to two hours, with free walls and ginjinha in a chocolate cup for about 2 euro. Nazaré is the clifftop Sítio, the lighthouse fort and the funicular, with giant waves from October to March. Choose Óbidos for architecture, Nazaré for the ocean, or take both on a two-stop transfer.
Yes, and we always give Coimbra two hours, including in the three-stop option, where the other two stops get one hour each. Entry to the Joanina Library is limited to 50 people every 20 minutes on a timed ticket, and we book that slot for you. A rushed one-hour stop without tickets is not worth the climb, which is why we do not sell one.
Yes, 15 euro for adults in 2026, half price for 13 to 24 and over 65, free under 12. It opens 9:00 to 18:30 from April to mid October and to 18:00 in winter, and closes on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December. Parking is free. Tickets are not included in the transfer and are paid on site at the official price.
A 45-minute moliceiro boat trip on the canals costs about 13 to 15 euro, and the ovos moles sweets are a protected local speciality. Costa Nova, 11 km away, has the striped palheiro houses. Together they fit a two-hour stop. Travellers who expect the Venice of Portugal are often disappointed, so treat it as a canal town, not Venice.
The A1 costs 25.05 euro for a car and 43.85 euro for a van in 2026, and the A8 coast route with Fátima is slightly less at 24.05 euro. Leaving and re-entering the A1 at Fátima, Coimbra or Aveiro adds no toll. Swingo includes every toll and the fuel in the fixed price.
For one or two people going city to city, yes: the Alfa Pendular takes under three hours from about 35 euro. From three people, or with stops, a private one-way transfer replaces train tickets, two taxis and a separate day tour, and it carries the luggage. Swingo prices are per vehicle, from 482 euro direct for up to three travellers and from 586 euro with one two-hour stop.
Yes. Pickup at Lisbon Airport, the cruise terminal or any Lisbon address, and drop-off at any address in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia or Porto Airport, at the same price. Tell us your flight number and we track it.
It stays locked in the vehicle, parked in a monitored or official car park at each stop, while your driver-guide walks with you. Batalha and Fátima have free official parking; Óbidos, Nazaré and Coimbra have paid municipal lots close to the sights.
Three at most, and that is by design. Travellers on four-stop transfers report feeling rushed, with an hour or less at each place. Two stops of two hours each is the most popular balance; three stops make a full nine hour day.
